Women’s Healthy Lifestyle Programme Small Heath & Aston

Based on Aston Sports and Community Club's aim to empower people to increase their knowledge and skills about health, we have launched our women’s healthy lifestyle programme in cooperation with our partner Sister to Sister in the mid of February. With the financial support of ISCA and SureStart, we meet once a week to discuss and learn about topics; such as stress, physical activity or nutrition. By creating active community networks and a welcoming women exclusive atmosphere, we try to enhance women’s confidence to care for their own as well as their family’s health.

The 6-8 week lasting programme is set up in Small Health and Aston. Child care is provided. If you are interested to join us, there are still some spaces left in the Small Health group. For further information please feel free to have a look on the homepage of Sister to Sister http://www.sister2sister.co.uk/ or come to the session at Small Heath Leisure Centre
Muntz Street, Small Heath, Birmingham B10 9RX, Thursdays from 5-7pm.

“I just have one suggestion for you guys: You should do this programme more than once a week. I really love it and I learn a lot.” – One woman of the Small Heath Group –

Street Golf Activator Workshop

Last Saturday 8th March 2014, we as a partner organisation of the nationwide charity Streetgames proudly hosted one workshop of the StreetGames training academy. This time 15 community sport project leaders, coaches and volunteers were trained to deliver Street Golf.

Street Golf? – It is a new developed form of golf which brings golf from the manicured grass of the golf course to the normal street or park. This means you can play it everywhere without any bright plaid polo shirts or trousers either.

Our 6 young leaders from Aston Sports and Community Club improved their ‘handicap’ and coaching skills while chipping the ball through a climbing frame or into a goal on the playground and by delivering games they had developed themselves to their colleagues. So, they are well prepared to run Street Golf sessions at Aston Sports and Community Club in the future. Congratulations guys!

International Summer School in Turkey

As part of Aston Sports and Community Club's commitment to support and develop local leaders, we co-organised an international summer school in partnership with Osmaniye University in Turkey, supported by the local community. The summer school hosted young people from across Europe including Estonia, France, Romania, Lithuiana and Turkey.

This years focus of the summer school was equality and diversity and how we as community organisations can create opportunities to be even more inclusive of people with disabilities.

Here are some of the comments from the young leaders:

"The project was an amazing experience for me. I learnt so much from everyone and I will be taking what Ive learnt and experienced back to Birmingham. Its been a wonderful experience and I would recommend it to everyone. Thank you Aston Sports Club"

Wasim Khan guests at ACC Awards

Aston CC continued its development with an excellent awards ceremony on Sunday 24th November, with special guest Wasim Khan.  Wasim presented a range of player of the season awards to the youth and senior players, and it was particularly positive that a lot of the young players stayed to talk with him afterwards.  We at ASC and ACC would liek to give our heartfelt thanks to Wasim for giving his time to the event.  His excellent autobiography was given out to all the individual winners, its available to buy here.

First Ever Aston Oscars Hailed a Success

The first ever Aston Oscars awards night was held at Broadway School on Saturday 28th September
to honour those people who make Aston the area it is.  Awards were in a large number of categories
and those attending were treated to music, a fashion show and excellent food

.

One of the standout award winners was for a lifetime of service to the community, awarded to Zoe Jaddoo, who thanked everyone present for not forgetting her. ASC Director, Matt Kendall, who also received an award said, "Zoe's selection, and her reaction, is what makes these things so valuable - I had never heard of the work she had done until now, and she now knows that her work to save Broadway 6th form back in the 80s has not been forgotten". The Bidgley Power Foundation, close associates of  ASC organised the awards evening, and worked extremely hard to make it a success.

Pritesh Pattni, lead organiser said afterwards, "I think we achieved one important goal which was to really
motivate people to go out and do even more to make their community a better place to live."

Youth in Action!  Aston hosts its first ever seminar.

From the 30th August to the 4th September, ASC were proud to host a youth workers
seminar to develop the quality of youth exchanges.  We welcomed partners from Slovenia,
Italy, Norway, Ireland, Turkey and the UK to Aston and Birmingham for what we hope was
a profitable and enjoyable seminar and which gives us the chance to develop more
projects in the future.

Doorstep Sports Clubs with StreetGames

ASC are proud to be working with StreetGames on the Sport England funded Doorstep Sports
Club programme for the next 3 years.  ASC will be working with StreetGames to develop an even
better multisports offer for young people aged 14-25 in the area.  The main sports for boys will
be Football, Cricket, Badminton and Table Tennis but with plenty more.  For girls there will be a
wide variety of activities.
