Aston FC roared into the Birmingham FA Junior Cup Semi Finals after a hard fought 3-2 victory over Barton United FC.

The tie which has been postponed once finally took place on Saturday the 16th of January in Burton on Trent.

Aston who had not trained for over 4 weeks had to blow off the cobwebs to produces a stunning performance to catapult themselves into the Semi Finals. An outstanding hatrick from Superman Michael McGhie sealed the victory.

Aston started the game well and went 1-0 through McGhie. Their lead was protected going into the half time break allowing Barton United to recuperate.

In the second half Barton came rushing out of the blocks trying to get back into the game and were aptly rewarded with an equalising goal.

At 1-1, the game was tight. In a moment of brilliance Leon Ward manufactured a yard of space and let off a thunderbolt and hit the underside of the cross bar. From a distance the ball looked over the line and this caused the Aston players to celebrate the goal with jubilation. However, the referee deemed that the ball was not over the line and made the game continue. The Aston players were still celebrating as Barton United FC swept forward and scored to go 2-1 up. This caused up roar as the Aston players were incensed that the goal was not given. Justin Harding was sent off for persistent arguing with the referee. Aston were well up against it.

As the game continued, Aston continued to press forward regaining their earlier momentum, dominating possession and with it the game. In a sudden burst of electrifying pace, McGhie broke through to equalise, 2-2. Aston were on the ascendancy, Barton FC were rocking. In the last 15 minutes of an eventful 2nd period, McGhie broke away again and scored to send Aston FC to the semi finals of the Birmingham County Football Association Junior Cup.

AFC Team Manager Ian Ward said after the game, “I thought that we were deserved winners. We really showed that we mean business. The lads have not trained for a long time now and to pull off a performance and victory over a good team like Barton shows you the character these lads have. It is a great achievement for us. Hopefully, we can push on and win our next game.
